Electric Boogaloo: the Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films

Fans of bargain-basement cinema will find much to enjoy in this affectionate documentary about Cannon Films, the infamous production company best known for churning out schlocky, tasteless, low-budget motion pictures during the 1980s. Run by impulsive movie moguls Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, Cannon was responsible for such titles as Over the Top, American Ninja and King Solomon's Mines, not to mention the poorly received Death Wish sequels and a number of Chuck Norris vehicles. Charting the company's rise and fall, Electric Boogaloo combines clips from these films (as well as many others) with anecdotal testimonies from various individuals, including Elliott Gould, Dolph Lundgren and Franco Zeffirelli. The film repeats the same point over and over - Golan and Globus were prolific salesmen with little regard for quality - but it works well on that level and the stories are fun. A must-see for cinephiles.
