Remainder

At the start of this moody psychological thriller, young man Tom (Tom Sturridge) is involved in a freak accident. As a result, he is left with severe memory loss, for which his lawyer secures a financial settlement of £8.5 million. Using this money, Tom re-enacts a series of half-remembered experiences that might be linked to his past. To begin with, for example, he renovates a specific residential building so that it looks exactly - key word - as he remembers it. Though Tom is a fairly unsympathetic character, Sturridge is compellingly watchable as a cold, obsessive perfectionist who is unusually particular when it comes to the details. In truth, the story may be too strange and elusive for some viewers. But for those who don't mind unusual films that refuse to provide all the answers, Remainder offers a haunting, intoxicating experience that will linger in the memory.
