Seriously strange but also oddly enchanting, this Danish black comedy revolves around brothers Elias (Mads Mikkelsen, from Casino Royale) and Gabriel (David Dencik). Academic Gabriel seems sensible enough, but there's definitely a screw loose in obsessive masturbator Elias, who can neither hold down a job or sustain a romantic relationship. After the man they called dad dies the brothers learn they are, in fact, half-brothers, adopted as infants, which partly explains why the two have so little in common apart from cleft palates. A search for their birth father, a mysterious geneticist, leads them to a remote Danish island where they encounter three more half-brothers (Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Soren Malling and Nicolas Bro), feral eccentrics living in a vast crumbling sanatorium with a menagerie of peculiar animals. Like the mansion where most of the action unfolds, writer/director Anders Thomas Jensen's fourth feature brims with mutant creatures, bestial desires and warped family feelings.
