Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Moody, bleak and uneven, this award-winning low-budget thriller rests on the able shoulders of Aiden Gillen (Game of Thrones) who stars as Carver, a North London photographer failing to cope with his son's apparently accidental death and the breakdown of his relationship with ex-wife Rachel (Amanda Mealing), the boy's mother. He falls into a downward spiral, turning to drink and drugs as he seeks the truth about his son's life and befriends a troubled ten-year-old boy (Joseph Duffy) to ease his pain, before being targeted by a gang of young thugs. Strong performances and vivid production design buoy up this evocative, troubling film that shows flashes of brilliance from writer/director Simon Blake, making his feature debut. RSC star Jonathan Slinger, Elodie Yung as Carver's girlfriend and rapper Sonny Green also make an impression in a drama that Blake describes as an examination of "how vulnerable you are as a parent".
