Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Tom Cruise clinging to the side of a plane during take-off is just one of the eye-popping stunts in this fifth episode of the spy franchise. After the Impossible Missions Force is dismantled by the CIA, its members take covert measures to neutralise a global threat posed by the mysterious Syndicate. With one foot firmly in light-hearted 007-style escapist spectacle and the other in elegantly orchestrated Hitchcockian suspense, director Christopher McQuarrie balances the knowing sophistication and tongue-in-cheek fun with a keen eye and superior visual flair to keep the action racing along. Tom Cruise is once more on impressive form as agent Ethan Hunt, Sean Harris makes for a menacing villain and a steely Rebecca Ferguson is a welcome addition to the usual IMF suspects (Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames). The result is a fast and furious delight.
