Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

The mutated critters running amok in this low-budget horror raise more titters than jitters when they get their teeth into vacationing students in an isolated lakeside cabin. Clichés and bad puns (involving beavers, of course) are rife as a sextet of horny guys and gals fall prey to some ropey-looking rodents. Having said that, director Jordan Rubin has tongue firmly planted in cheek from the off, there are nods to the creature feature work of John Landis and Steven Spielberg - where would aquatic monster flicks be without an homage to Jaws - and a turn into Raimi-esque Evil Dead territory is genuinely flabbergasting. The cast evidently had a ball making this nonsense, too (check out the pre-end credits gag reel). But even though there's something quaint about these model-based monsters (as opposed to the cut-price CGI effects in Sharknado and its ilk), it's not really horrific or funny enough for true cult status. Stick around past the credits, though, for the best pun of all.
