Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Twistmeister M Night Shyamalan gets his Hitchcock groove on in this deviously playful horror thriller that satisfies as a companion piece to his earlier, more successful works. James McAvoy demonstrates his impressive acting skills as the lunatic kidnapper who imprisons three girls in a mysterious basement, telling them they are being kept as "sacred food". What's more, he's suffering from dissociative identity disorder, meaning his victims (one being the deliciously enigmatic Anya Taylor-Joy) are never sure which of his 23 troubled personalities they are dealing with. Is it the flamboyant fashion designer, the prissy schoolmarm, the precocious juvenile or the control freak? Or is it another persona that radical psychiatrist Betty Buckley (significantly from Brian De Palma's Carrie) believes can access supernatural abilities? It's a fun conceit that grips through every suspenseful turn and mind-bending contortion, right up to the final shock revelation that puts everything seen in a totally unexpected frame.
