Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Not your typical biopic, Danny Boyle's film hones in on three events in the life of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, specifically the launches of the Mac in 1984, the NeXT Cube in 1988 and the iMac in 1998. Each act takes place backstage, unfolding in real time, as Jobs (Michael Fassbender) prepares to present the products to an audience. Fassbender offers a compelling performance, depicting Jobs as a demanding, single-minded perfectionist. He's well served by Aaron Sorkin's rapid-fire dialogue, which is filled with witty lines and snappy put-downs. Admittedly, there are times when the story feels somewhat contrived, given that Jobs is confronted by the same five people before every presentation. Crucially, though, this is a minor complaint in a thoroughly enjoyable film.
