Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

If 2015's Jurassic World took the original Jurassic Park concept to its logical theme-park conclusion, then this follow-up is something of a shadowy cousin to its 1997 sequel The Lost World. Both films are darker, both bring back Jeff Goldblum's Ian Malcolm (though just in a key cameo here) and both follow a similar save-the-dinos plot. Perhaps most crucially, both struggle telling a new story away from the original island, with Fallen Kingdom mainly acting as the set-up for a more interesting sequel. But there's still plenty to enjoy, including the return of likeable leads Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, some fascinating new ideas, a creepy new dinosaur called the Indoraptor and a brave ending that upends the rules of the franchise. But in the end, no matter how well it's put together, the feeling is that this is just a stepping stone towards a bigger, better and more interesting story - and it's hard to find that entirely satisfying.
