Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This dark, peculiar comedy is a study of teenage loneliness. Set in a small Welsh village, it focuses on Jim (Craig Roberts), a socially awkward teenager who doesn't have any friends. For the first 25 minutes or so, we follow Jim as he occupies his time with various mundane activities, which include playing video games and walking his beloved dog. But just as things are starting to drag, Jim's world and the film are shaken up by the sudden arrival of Dean (Emile Hirsch), a cocksure, mysterious American who teaches Jim how to be cool. What follows is a witty combination of the surreal with the deadpan. The end result won't be for everyone, but Roberts's writing and directing debut is definitely worth your time if you're in the market for an unusual teen movie with a dry sense of humour.
