Fact-checkers may be disappointed that this take on the famous 1970s Enfield Poltergeist case isn't a completely accurate record of events. However, James Wan's sequel is guaranteed to appeal to anyone who enjoys the thrill of being spooked. Mixing fact with fantasy, the unimaginable with the believable, the film reunites Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as real-life ghostbusters Ed and Lorraine Warren - the couple who give a damn about the damned. They race to the north London home of single mum Peggy (Frances O'Connor) and her energetic brood, who are being tormented by inexplicable events. This solid, big-budget horror ratchets up the tension as it goes and triumphs with its well-crafted frights and attention to period detail. If you like to be scared, The Conjuring 2 is your upside-down crucifix.
