Review

A star rating of 5 out of 5.

A young black man's anxiety about meeting his white girlfriend's posh parents for the first time proves to be well founded, but not in the way he expected, as this socially aware horror mystery unfolds. Initially accepting the assurances of Rose (Allison Williams) that they're liberal Obama voters, Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) soon finds himself caught off-guard by the curious demeanour of their oddly obsequious black servants. However, weirder and more threatening experiences await as the country mansion gradually divulges its secrets. Delivered from a definite African-American perspective that provocatively addresses simmering racial tensions in Trump-era America, TV comic Jordan Peele's debut feature bravely eschews the carnage of much contemporary horror fare and embraces the classic storytelling of a previous period. Here you'll find the subtle unease of Rosemary's Baby and the imaginative shock-value of a vintage Twilight Zone episode, in a film that's both combative in its themes and highly accomplished in execution. Altogether remarkable, and the less you know going in, the further your chin will drop.
