Psychological thriller based on a true story, starring Gerard Butler, Peter Mullan and Connor Swindells. In 1900, three men begin their shift working at the remote Flannan Isles lighthouse. When a stranger washes ashore following a storm, bringing with him a chest full of gold, the group argues over what to do with it, and their stay descends into paranoia and violence.
Gerard Butler and Peter Mullan are top of the bill in a lurid and decidedly fanciful drama "inspired by" the mystery disappearance in 1900 of three keepers from a lighthouse in Flannan Isles in Scotland's Outer Hebrides. The most widely accepted explanation is that the men were swept off the rock by freak waves. The Vanishing plumps instead, not for some of the more fanciful yet plausible theories that surround this Mary Celeste-style mystery, but for a wildly improbable scenario involving a washed-up treasure chest and some Scandi baddies. After a slow-burn but promisingly claustrophobic start, the movie mutates into an increasingly ripe melodrama that's slickly done and decently acted, but casts not one watt of credible new light on what actually might have happened on Flannan Isles.
