Gringo

A strait-laced businessman (David Oyelowo) falls foul of Mexican drugs cartels when his American pharmaceutical company bosses send him south of the border to oversee the manufacture of a "weed pill" (medical marijuana in tablet form) in this action-packed romp. After he's kidnapped by a ruthless gang looking for a larger share of the profits, his paymasters hire an unhinged troubleshooter (Sharlto Copley) to rescue him, resulting in a succession of riotously comic and violent skirmishes. The outlandish set pieces are neatly punctuated by some choice verbal sparring between the leads, with more laughs provided by Charlize Theron as a drugs firm bigwig who's arguably as tough as the Mexican baddies. Director Nash Edgerton maintains a lively pace throughout, raising the odd question about the morality and exploitation attached to legalising pot. But, for the most part, he aims for the viewer's funny bone and scores a pleasing number of direct hits.
