Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

The regular parlour games of three suburban couples take a turn for the bizarre when one of their number raises the stakes in this brash comedy. Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams head the cast as a couple caught up in a murder mystery that snowballs towards outlandishly violent set pieces and cartoon-like slapstick, where no one is entirely certain what is make-believe and what constitutes real-life jeopardy. It's all good fun, with each increasingly unlikely scenario punctuated by nifty one-liners from the talented cast (Bateman and Sharon Horgan especially shine), although the sheer volume of twists and turns threatens to become wearisome. Some of the action may be a little too gruesome for some viewers, but the steady stream of humour tempers the shocks to the point where it's hard to take any of what happens with more than a pinch of salt.
