Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This sombre mystery thriller is a story about doing the right thing - or, more specifically, a story about trying to do the right thing. Set in a small, run-down town in "Trump's America", it focuses on Donny (Andrew Scott), a rubbish-truck driver who might be on the autistic spectrum. When a young boy dies in mysterious circumstances, Donny becomes obsessed with finding out what really happened. His investigation is mildly intriguing, but the story often drags and is let down by a couple of plot developments that don't ring true. Scott is sympathetic as Donny, especially during a scene where his young daughter's mother, who became pregnant after a one-night stand with Donny, reiterates that she doesn't love him. Crucially, though, the film doesn't explain why Donny is determined to uncover the truth. Steel Country is a watchable, well-acted thriller, but it's hard to shake the feeling that something is missing.
