Blumhouse, the Scare Factory du jour (The Purge, Insidious, Happy Death Day) gives the camp 1970s-80s TV series a tedious horror spin that, while initially somewhat intriguing in concept, gets more ridiculous and convoluted as it goes on. After winning a weekend getaway contest, five people arrive at a luxury resort. There they meet the mysterious Mr Roarke (Michael Peña), who has arranged for their wildest fantasies to come true. Ranging from school bully revenge and heroism to second chances and hedonistic excess, it's only when these dream desires start connecting nightmarishly, and Michael Rooker pops out of the jungle in wasted appearances to point them towards the truth, that the visitors realise something's wrong. Comatose direction by Jeff Wadlow (Truth or Dare) turns the comedy leaden, the horror perfunctory and the twists stupefying. But the Fiji locations and neat homages to the original show are quite nice...
