Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Based on the true story of a terrorist attack at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, this biopic profiles the security guard who was hailed as a hero for saving lives when a nail bomb detonated, only to later come under suspicion of planting the device himself. A socially awkward loner with a fondness for collecting guns, Richard Jewell (played here by I, Tonya's Paul Walter Hauser) underwent trial by media after it was leaked that the FBI (represented here by Jon Hamm's composite character) was investigating every aspect of his life. Director Clint Eastwood initially maps out an account of ordinary Joe heroism with little fuss or fanfare, but veers towards heavy-handedness and soap-box outrage when Jewell finds himself at the centre of the media storm. Hauser and Sam Rockwell, as his slick lawyer, bring depth to their portrayals, infinitely more subtle than the cartoon villainy of Hamm and Olivia Wilde as a headline-hungry journalist.
