Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

A patchy sequel to The Big Lebowski made with the blessing of that film's directors, the Coen brothers, but without their participation, The Jesus Rolls sees the return of Hispanic ten-pin bowler Jesus Quintana. Played by John Turturro, who also writes and directs, he is released from prison and hits the road with his pal (Bobby Cannavale), stealing cars, dodging police, and hooking up with women (including Audrey Tautou's cheerful Marie) in a bizarre riff on Bertrand Blier's Les Valseuses (1974). Unlike that provocative French hit, Turturro's film is disarmingly sweet-natured, with lush visuals and a peppy soundtrack courtesy of Emilie Simon. Sadly, it is also a curate's egg, let down by juvenile humour, a pungent whiff of self-indulgence, and a dark turn that almost sends it careering off the road. A curiosity at best.
