Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Russell Crowe slums it in this far-fetched road-rage shocker that mechanically recycles the Duel formula, tarting it up with mobile phone-orientated plot twists before skidding into vicious slasher lunacy. Stressed-out driver Rachel (Caren Pistorius) beeps her horn at a man (Crowe) who's stalled at traffic lights, and then spends the rest of her very bad day being irrationally hounded by him. Even before the real CCTV car-crash credits, it's obvious the pill-popping serial abuser is a psycho because he's murdered his family and blown up their home. His relentless pursuit of Rachel and her loved ones is meant to stir debate about toxic masculinity, but that is quickly submerged by the perfunctory thrills and chills. There are pit stops for some sleekly controlled tension - the diner confrontation with Rachel's clueless breakfast date, the highway pile-ups - but Unhinged is mainly a protracted and joyless ride.
