The formative years of Donald Trump are scathingly chronicled in this drama from Iranian-Danish film-maker Ali Abbasi, which is less a conventional biopic than a villain origin story. Sebastian Stan plays the young "Donny", a socially awkward tabloid celebrity desperate to prove himself to his father Fred (Martin Donovan). He sets out to become a real-estate mogul and makes a Faustian deal with infamous attorney Roy Cohn (Succession star Jeremy Strong). As Trump's ego and property empire grow thanks to the skill set gleaned from this devious and domineering adopted godfather, the man who became US President takes shape. In a role vulnerable to sketch-show caricature, Stan impressively pinpoints details of Trump's body language and speech patterns, while Abbasi directs with flare as he matches the film's aesthetics to the eras traversed. In the end, though, the intensity of Strong's supporting performance is more compelling than anything else, leaving viewers wondering if the film's focus would be better placed on Cohn.
