The faith of young Mormon missionaries on a home visit to a potential convert is put to the test in this creepy, slow-burning horror thriller from directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (writers of the first A Quiet Place). Avuncular Mr Reed (Hugh Grant) soon disarms the devout but cautious young duo (Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East), enticing them inside his house with the aroma of his wife's freshly baked blueberry pie. However, as he engages them in doctrinal debate - with Monopoly, Star Wars, the Hollies and Radiohead all part of his rigorous dissection of the major religions - this cat-and-mouse chamber piece shifts into a darker, more menacing arena where life-or-death choices confront the increasingly fearful pair. Grant is a revelation, effortlessly moving from genial and playful ("Time for pie!") to deliciously deadpan and frightening. However, he is matched by the performances of Thatcher (TV's Yellowjackets) and East (The Fabelmans), whose characters' evangelism makes them no less unsympathetic as they seek to be free of his unfathomable scheming and labyrinthine abode.
