Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Inspired by an astonishing true-life story, this boisterous comedy follows a pair of women who run a scam on supermarket coupons that turns them into millionaires. Frequently left home alone by her IRS-employee husband, jobless Connie (Kristen Bell) has become a money-saving obsessive. When she stumbles upon a way to bulk import vouchers and sell them on to unsuspecting shoppers, she turns the notion into a multi-million-dollar business with her YouTube-loving pal JoJo (Kirby Howell-Baptiste). But with a retail-security officer (Paul Walter Hauser) and mail fraud investigator (Vince Vaughn) on their trail, the friends' fun times could prove short-lived. Playing out like Desperate Housewives meets Catch Me if You Can, Queenpins is filled with sleek cars and private jets as the duo reap the rewards of their swindle. With its tongue planted permanently in its cheek, the film delivers some fun gags, including singer Bebe Rexha's droll cameo as a hacker. The flippant tone and broad humour ultimately short-change the characters' emotional arcs, but Bell and Howell-Baptiste are so likeable that they make this a fun ride while it lasts.
