Regarded by some as Bollywood's Gone with the Wind, Mehboob Khan's colour remake of his 1940 film, Aurat, alters the original storyline by having the heartbroken mother win the support of her neighbours instead of suffering in isolation, thus becoming a symbol of national pain and perseverance. Recalling the rural lyricism of the great Soviet director, Alexander Dovzhenko, the action is told as an extended flashback, as Nargis remembers the hardships that ultimately drove her to kill her own rebellious son, Sunil Dutt (Nargis's future husband). Sacrificing realism for epic spectacle, the film was nominated for the best foreign film Oscar.
