Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Constance Wu stars here as a working-class New Yorker who has to contend with tradition and expectation when she learns that her boyfriend (Henry Golding) belongs to one of Singapore's richest families. With a predominantly Asian cast, the film breaks boundaries for a Hollywood production. Moreover, it tells a vibrant, funny comedy of manners that offers a vicarious journey through a life of opulence. Filled to the brim with hilarious, charming characters, this very modern Cinderella story has an excellent villain in Michelle Yeoh, who plays Golding's disapproving mother. The star brings gravitas to the story and becomes the biggest hurdle in the way of the couple and their search for happiness. Crazy Rich Asians may occasionally get carried away in its celebration of all things romantic and expensive. However, it's a polished show stopper that offers all the glitz of a golden era Hollywood spectacle, while also shaking up the well-worn romcom blueprint.
