Jude Law heads the cast of a hugely satisfying crime drama as a world-weary FBI agent hunting white supremacists in the Pacific Northwest. With the assistance of a young, inexperienced local sheriff's deputy (Tye Sheridan), his investigations lead to a Christian fundamentalist compound, and a militant, far-right breakaway faction believed to be behind a string of daring bank raids. Soon, their focus is on the group's leader (Nicholas Hoult), suspected of carrying out the robberies to fund a war chest for more shocking large-scale terrorist attacks. Based on real events in the 1980s, and time-stamped on screen to track the ongoing progress of the case over 18 months, Justin Kurzel's film has a grimy, near documentary-like feel. While the narrative follows the codes and conventions of a high-quality police procedural, it's elevated to even greater heights by two stellar central performances. Law is at the very top of his game as the seasoned, cynical fed, while Hoult is unsettling and charismatic as the white-power kingpin.
