Stanley Kubrick's final movie could have been a masterpiece. All his trademark creepiness and grandeur is present and correct, most famously during its orgy sequence. Yet to modern eyes much of the film's late-90s boldness feels tame; there's also an uncomfortable focus on female nudity. Kubrick's baroque excesses aside, though, this is still a hypnotic story of a marriage falling apart. Tom Cruise plays a New York doctor, Bill Harford, who's shaken to the core when his wife, Alice (Nicole Kidman), reveals that she was once tempted to have an affair. This sends him out in search of sexual revenge. Too many scenes are frustratingly overlong, Alice's whispered soliloquies veer towards tedium and nobody in the film talks like a real-life human. (That's aside from the excellent Sydney Pollack, who also made final touches to the film after its director's sudden demise.) But Eyes Wide Shut still has an eerie mood that is purely Kubrickian. His smooth, neon-lit world and its unhappy residents are compelling, even addictive. Don't look away.
