Tilda Swinton says Doctor Strange whitewashing claims are a "misunderstanding"
The actress says the film comes from a "very diverse place"
Tilda Swinton has finally addressed those "whitewashing" claims about her Doctor Strange character The Ancient One.
For those who aren't familiar with the story so far, Marvel bosses came under fire for whitewashing after changing the character's race and gender, replacing the comic book's traditional male Tibetan mystic with what appears to be a caucasian female Ancient One instead.
And now Swinton, whose casting the studio has already defended, has waded into the debate.
“Anybody calling for more accurate representation of the diverse world we live in has got me standing right beside them,” the actress told Entertainment Weekly.
“I think when people see this film, they’re going to see that it comes from a very diverse place, in all sorts of ways. Maybe this misunderstanding around this film has been an opportunity for that voice to be heard, and I’m not against that at all. But I do think that when people see the film, they’ll see that it’s not necessarily a target for that voice.”
We'll have to wait until October 28th (in the UK) or November 4th (in the USA) to find out.
