After a period in which numerous Netflix originals have been unexpectedly cancelled, it's a huge relief to see comedy-drama Atypical go out on its own terms with a pre-planned final season.

The series introduced the world to Sam Gardner (Keir Gilchrist), an 18-year-old on the autism spectrum, as he looked to build new relationships and prepare himself for leaving home.

Atypical season four will pick up with the show's emotionally charged storylines, as Sam adjusts to sharing an apartment with longtime friend Zahid, while his sister Casey continues a passionate relationship with troubled classmate, Izzie.

Fans are eager to see exactly how things will end for these beloved characters and they don't have much longer to wait, as Atypical season four launches on Netflix later this week.

CONFIRMED: Atypical season 4 arrives on Netflix on Friday 9th July 2021.

The final season will consist of 10 half-hour episodes, which will be available to binge watch at once to the delight of fans.

Atypical was renewed for a fourth and final season in February 2020, but production was delayed by the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

There was some concern among fans that Atypical could go the way of GLOW and The Society, both of which were cancelled because of the health crisis, but fortunately this proved not to be the case.

What will happen in Atypical season 4?

Atypical season four will offer a welcome return for the Gardner family, as Sam flies the nest to try living with Zahid – but it looks like there will be some growing pains as the two transition from friends to roommates.

If that wasn't enough pressure, he'll also be facing academic probation from his university, meaning it's never been more important for him to stay focused on his work.

Casey is also feeling the heat as she juggles her dream of going to UCLA and her intense romance with classmate Izzie, whose home life is as difficult as ever.

On the bright side, Elsa and Doug seem to have fully reconciled after their marriage was thrown into chaos when the former had a brief affair with a local bartender.

They'll need to work together to keep their kids on track, while Doug looks to be taking on the added responsibility of training Evan in being an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

As the final season of the show, Atypical season four will also be tasked with giving fans a satisfying end to this story, but that could mean some bittersweet emotional moments.

Atypical season four sees the return of the Gardner family, led by It Follows star Keir Gilchrist as penguin-loving student Sam and Oscar nominee Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight) as protective mother, Elsa.

Michael Rapaport (Prison Break) also returns as well-meaning father Doug Gardner, whose understanding of his son has grown exponentially over the previous three seasons.

Fans will be pleased to see Brigette Lundy-Paine (Bill & Ted Face The Music) and Fivel Stewart return as Casey Gardner and her girlfriend Izzie, who have sparked an avid fandom that labels itself the "Cazzie Army".

Nik Dodani (Escape Room) and Jenna Boyd also reprise their roles as Zahid and Paige, with the latter at a loose end following her unexpected decision to drop out of university.

After season three left both of them heartbroken, Graham Rogers and Rachel Redleaf will return as siblings Evan and Beth Chapin, as they adjust to no longer having Casey in their lives.

Roseanne and The Big Bang Theory star Sara Gilbert will be back as Sam's university mentor, Professor Judd, who has developed a rapport with the bright young student after a rocky start to their relationship.

In the supporting cast, Dominique Brown and Tal Anderson are confirmed to be returning in the roles of Jasper and Sid, two good friends that Sam made during his time at a social group for people on the autism spectrum.

Is there a trailer for Atypical season 4?

Yes! Netflix dropped the trailer in June 2021, just a few weeks before the scheduled release date, and it looks like we can expect an emotional ending for the Gardners' story. Watch below.
