A new trailer for Captain America: Brave New World, which will be released in 2025 as part of the current Phase Five of the MCU, was recently unveiled at D23, giving fans a first look at Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, who was last seen in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, in action. The film also stars Danny Ramirez as Falcon/Joquin Torres and Harrison Ford as President Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross.

And that's not all there is to look forward to, with Phase Six on the horizon and plenty of exciting titles on the way, including the witchy series Agatha All Along, the mercenary-heavy Thunderbolts* and the much-anticipated Fantastic Four reboot.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps will star Pedro Pascal as Mister Fantastic/Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as The Invisible Woman/Susan Storn, Joseph Quinn as The Human Torch/Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bacharach as The Thing/Ben Grimm.

The film will also co-star Ozark fan-favourite Julia Garner as Silver Surfer/Shalla-Bal and Ralph Ineson as the powerful planet-eater Galactus.

There's also plenty of hype around the upcoming Avengers 5, now subtitled Doomsday – the first of two Avengers films releasing in the MCU's Phase 6 – especially following the surprising announcement that Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU.

Yep, the actor, whose career has been redefined by his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man in the MCU, will make his return as Doctor Doom/Victor Von Doom in The Fantastic Four, and then in Avengers 5, which is now named Doomsday. He'll return alongside Avengers: Endgame directors, the Russo brothers, who will be helming the new Avengers movies.

Making his grand appearance at the Marvel Studios panel at SDCC, RDJ dramatically removed his mask, declaring: "New mask, same task." So, if you're as confused as Gwyneth Paltrow appears to be, it's high time to catch up on anything you missed in the MCU.

No Marvel fan wants to miss out on any in-jokes, references, Easter eggs or post-credits scenes – so where exactly do you need to start in the monumental MCU?

Marvel movies in order: How to watch in MCU chronological and release order

The easiest way to catch up on the MCU is to watch the Marvel movies in release date order, which also neatly categorises the MCU story into its distinct "phases".

The first three phases make up what is now referred to as the Infinity Saga, beginning with the introduction of the Avengers characters and ending with the time-hopping mega-event that was Avengers: Endgame.

Watching this method will send you on the same journey that millions of Marvel fans all over the world have enjoyed, allowing you to watch first-hand how the MCU grew from a fairly grounded superhero flick to an all-out space opera.

It's true that watching this way will mean you see some events outside of their in-universe order, i.e. the origin of Captain America or the first meeting between Nick Fury and Captain Marvel, but this doesn't cause any serious storytelling problems.

In release date order, the MCU begins with 2008's Iron Man. It continues up to the present, with the most recent release being Deadpool & Wolverine, and then delves into future releases which have been announced, including the recently re-named Avengers: Doomsday.

Future MCU movies and TV shows

So, we still have a wealth of Marvel series left to enjoy in the next few years - and beyond!

How to watch Marvel movies in chronological order

Looking at the Marvel series in chronological order, it's actually Captain America: The First Avenger that is set earliest, taking place during the Second World War where a skinny Steve Rogers is first dosed with the incredible Super Soldier Serum.

The latest film entries in the chronological timeline are Thor: Love and Thunder and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which were released in 2022 but due to the Endgame time jump, actually takes place around the year 2026.

Some fans believe that this is the best way to watch the MCU movies as elements are introduced as the characters in the story encounter them – for instance, this method makes Nick Fury's Infinity War cameo more satisfying, as viewers will already have the context provided by Captain Marvel (released in cinemas the following year).

However, there are other cases in which this is a detriment, such as Ant-Man and the Wasp, which is largely set before the events of Infinity War, but its own post-credits scene spoils the ending to the epic crossover movie.

The following list of films and TV series are based on Disney+'s official viewing order.

Here are the Marvel movies in chronological viewing order:

  1. Captain America: The First Avenger (1942)
  2. Captain Marvel (1995)
  3. Iron Man (2010)
  4. Iron Man 2 (2011)
  5. The Incredible Hulk (2011)
  6. Thor (2011)
  7. The Avengers (2012)
  8. Thor: The Dark World (2013)
  9. Iron Man 3 (2012)
  10. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
  11. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
  12. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
  13. Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
  14. Ant-Man (2015)
  15. Captain America: Civil War (2016)
  16. Black Widow (2016, excluding post-credits scene)
  17. Black Panther (2016)
  18. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2016)
  19. Doctor Strange (2016-2017)
  20. Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
  21. Ant-Man and the Wasp (2017)
  22. Avengers: Infinity War (2017)
  23. Avengers: Endgame (2017-2022)
  24. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2023)
  25. Spider-Man: Far From Home (2023)
  26. Eternals (2023, excluding flashbacks)
  27. Spider-Man: No Way Home (2024)
  28. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2025)
  29. Thor: Love and Thunder (2026)
  30. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2026)
  31. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2026)
  32. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2026)
  33. The Marvels (2026)
  34. Deadpool & Wolverine (2029-ish)

Some fans believe that this is the best way to watch the MCU movies as elements are introduced as the characters in the story encounter them – for instance, this method makes Nick Fury's Infinity War cameo more satisfying, as viewers will already have the context provided by Captain Marvel (released in cinemas the following year).

What's the best way to watch the Marvel movies in order?

THE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3
Zoe Saldana as Gamora in Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Marvel Studios

While the choice is yours entirely, we'd recommend just watching in plain ol' release order – it's the order in which the films were produced and so, ultimately, the order in which they are best viewed.... at least if you're an MCU newbie, with post-credits scenes, Easter eggs and so on all making the most sense viewed in this order.

We would advise against using the chronological order if you're a total newcomer to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the method sounds appealing in theory, there are several reasons why it could actually hamper your overall experience of the MCU.

First off: you may struggle to remember the background of certain characters. Captain Marvel, for instance, will be introduced in the second film in the list, but won't be mentioned again until more than 40 screen hours later.

Also, making Captain Marvel your second MCU movie means you miss out on the in-jokes and references established over 17 preceding entries.

However, there is something to be said for ardent Marvel fans revisiting the saga chronologically, as this will give more depth to the backstory of some key characters and brings a new understanding of the MCU timeline (e.g. many don't realise that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 and 2 are set mere months apart).
