Star on Disney+ guide: price, new TV shows and movies and how to get them
Everything you need to know about Star – all the new content that's arrived on Disney+.
While Disney+ is already home to a vast number of Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars titles, another wave of shows will be arriving on the streamer with the launch of the Star section.
Now doubling the amount of content that's available on Disney+, Star brings in films and series from Disney's creative studios – from FX's Atlanta and Fox's 24, to Star originals such as Big Sky, a new thriller from Big Little Lies and The Undoing's David E. Kelley.
The idea is to add more "adult content" that previously wouldn't have sat comfortably alongside the family-friendly content already on the platform – the Disney+ Star content additions make this the sixth brand Disney has brought under the Disney+ banner. Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar and Nat Geo are all already on the streaming platform.
With more mature content comes some changes, as well as the slight price increase and the new content additions on 23rd February, parental controls have been added along with pins to lock profiles. The controls automatically set at 14+, but this can be raised to 18+ - you'll be prompted to do this when you log in next.
Read on for all you need to know about Star on Disney+, from all the new shows and movies available at launch to the price changes.
Star on Disney+ release date: when is Star coming to Disney+ UK?
The wait is over! Star arrived on Disney+ on Tuesday, 23rd February in the UK. Star will also be added to Disney+ in future international launches as standard.
What is Star on Disney+?
Disney+ Star is a tier within the platform for subscribers in Europe, Canada and New Zealand which allows them to stream a number of shows from Disney's other franchises.
Disney has dubbed it a "new general entertainment content brand" - think of it as a new channel within your Disney+ account next to the existing options like Pixar, Marvel, Stars Wars and Nat Geo.
"The Star brand will serve as home to thousands of hours of television and movies from Disney's creative studios, including Disney Television Studios, FX, 20th Century Studios, 20th Television and more," Disney promised ahead of the launch.
The best thing is you don't have to do anything extra to get Star on Disney+, it's all in one package.
Customers have been asking for more adult content for a while, and it always made sense - Disney owns Hulu as well as Fox. Hulu is behind series like The Handmaid's Tale and Love, Victor, hits in the US, but Hulu isn't available in the UK. Hulu comes in a bundle with Disney+ in the US, so this new UK package is a great move for non-US customers.
Disney also owns a huge back catalogue of content thanks to buying Fox. Fox is best known for series such as Fargo, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Americans and Atlanta, while 20th Century Studios has produced films such as the Avatar series, Bohemian Rhapsody, Con Air, The Darkest Hour and X-Men among other blockbusters.
Subscribers can enable Disney+ parental controls to stop their children from streaming Star titles that are intended for an older audience.
So now all Disney's content is in one place, one app, and you can switch between your kid-friendly content to your 'grown up' shows and movies.

Star on Disney+ price: How much does it cost?
In the UK you can subscribe to Disney+, including Star, for £7.99 a month, and £79.90 a year. As of 23rd February, the subscription price increased a little with the incorporation of Star. But if you had already subscribed to Disney+, you will continue to pay the old price until 23rd August, 2021.
It's worth noting that if you account ends between 23rd February to 23rd August then you will get the new price charge when you sign back up. Disney has confirmed that if you're an existing annual UK subscriber and you renew before 23rd August you won't get the new price until the next annual payment.
Disney+ subscribers in Eastern Europe, Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea will be able to access Star at a later date in 2021, while in Latin America, Disney is launching Star+ as a standalone streaming service which offers an array of live sport coverage.
Disney+ Australia subscribers will also see a price change from AU $8.99 a month or $89.99 a year to $11.99 a month to $119.99 a year.

Star on Disney+ TV shows: What shows are available from launch?
Disney has confirmed the titles included in Star at launch, which includes four brand-new originals.
The first is from Big Little Lies' David E. Kelley. Big Sky stars Ryan Phillippe and Kylie Bunbury as private detectives who set out to find two kidnapped sisters. The second is Love, Victor – a TV spin-off to 2018 film Love Simon – follows a new student at Creekwood High School on his journey of self-discovery.
Animated series Solar Opposites from the creators of Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland is also available at launch, and Marvel TV show Helstrom is also arriving.
Other series and films included in the Star packages are Kiefer Sutherland's 24, supernatural drama Lost, long-running comedy-drama Desperate Housewives, sitcom How I Met Your Mother, Prison Break, The X-Files, Atlanta, Black-ish and the Die Hard film franchise.
There are new shows on the way too that will come after the launch. Only Murders in the Building, The Old Man starring Jeff Bridges and Dopesick starring Michael Keaton are just a few of the US shows coming to Star in Europe and they will air exclusively on the platform.
There will also be UK shows made for the platform too, and while Disney is keeping their cards close to their chests as to what they will be, they have said that they will soon be announcing shows in the drama, comedy and unscripted genres imminently and we will keep you updated when we know more.
Same too for shows from other territories with shows from France, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands all lined up.

How long will we have to wait for new US shows?
Even though the gap is shorter than it used to be, and some shows air here the same day as they do Stateside, we do still have to wait for the latest episodes of certain shows to reach UK shores. Sometimes that wait is a long one.
With Star, Disney have said that the gap will vary from show to show, with some being available shortly after US transmission, and others having a longer gap.
For example, we got access to three episodes of Big Sky as of the Star launch on 23rd February to help catch us up with the US. As for long-running series like Grey's Anatomy, which already have UK broadcasters in place, we will get the latest seasons on Star but not until some time has passed after their first UK airing - much like how The Simpsons is added to the service.
- For the latest news and expert tips on getting the best deals this year, take a look at our Black Friday 2021 and Cyber Monday 2021 guides.
Will Disney+ Star show live sport?
In other regions, Disney+ has a bundle where you can add sports to your package. The USA version has a deal that combines Disney+ with Hulu and ESPN+ and while Star is our equivalent of Hulu in the UK, Disney has confirmed that there are no current plans for a sporting package over here.
Disney Plus parental controls: What do I need to do?
Star launched on 23rd February 2021 as a fully integrated part of Disney+ with its own branded tile (which will appear alongside the tiles for National Geographic, Star Wars, etc) and a vast collection of content.
Disney+ confirmed new parental controls will be added at the same time as Star to the platform. Subscribers will be asked if they want the new 18+ catalogue of content. When you log in for the first time after the launch of Star, you'll see a prompt.
You'll need to then re-enter your password to make sure as the account holder you agree with the changes.
As an adult/parent you'll then be able to select the limits for each profile within your account - this is done by content ratings so you can decide to stop your children selecting anything deemed mature. Sorry kids, Die Hard is out of bounds for now, but you can still watch WandaVision.
The PIN system stops the little ones accidentally getting into anything termed 'Star'. If you're the adult here the Star content will just show up within your existing Disney+ content.
