Starfield missions list: Main story chapters, faction quests & side quests

Naturally, it's quite easy to get distracted or simply forget how far into the main story you are. It's also useful to know just how long Starfield is so you can keep track.

That's why we've rounded up every Starfield main story mission in one place, so you know exactly how close you are to the credits.

It doesn't matter where you're playing on Xbox Series X/S or Microsoft Windows, this handy guide applies to all. We'll be updating it regularly, too, with new side missions constantly being discovered - something that will likely last for the next couple of months.

To find out more, head below, but be warned: Spoilers follow, so tread carefully if you want to experience Starfield as fresh as possible.

How many main story missions are in Starfield?

As far as we can make out, there are 19 main missions in Starfield. These can be completed in around 30-40 hours if you just want to blitz through the main campaign - but as we know, much of what makes Bethesda games great is what lies off the beaten track.

The main quest sees you coming into contact with an artifact on your first day on the job as a miner, and then making contact with Constellation and trying to figure out the mystery behind them.

We won’t spoil anything, but the quest ends with a very clever take on the new game mode that fits very well into the story.

This seemingly small list is quite deceptive, though, as many of these missions require you to fly to different planets and have many different objectives within them - but it should give you a broad sense of where you are in the story.

Here are all the faction quests in Starfield that we know of so far. We’ve separated them into their respective factions, so you can see where you are with a quick glance.

There are five main factions in Starfield: Constellation, United Colonies Vanguard, the Crimson Fleet, the Freestar Rangers and Ryujin Industries. Constellation is the main quest, so you can see those missions in the previous section.

This list may continue to expand if there are branching options for quests so be sure to check in for any updates.

In addition to these factions, there are also seven more minor ones: Ecliptic Mercenaries, House of the Enlightened, House of Va'Ruun Zealots, Spacers, The Trade Authority and Trackers. From our time spent in Starfield so far, it doesn't appear that any of these factions can be joined.
