8 times Doctor Who really did travel far, far away from Cardiff
Remember when Peter Capaldi went to the moon in series eight? That was actually Lanzarote...
Kill The Moon – Lanzarote
Peter Capaldi got to visit this mountainous Spanish island in series eight. Cast and crew filmed at the Volcán del Cuervo in Timanfaya National Park. With its twisted rock formations and desolate landscape, it doubles for the moon. The Doctor and Clara (Jenna Coleman) put on orange jumpsuits and investigate why this natural satellite has put on weight.
Interestingly, Lanzarote also featured in the location for classic serial Planet of Fire in 1984, with Peter Davidson as the fifth doctor, which included a memorable bikini scene starring Nicola Bryant, who played American college student Peri Brown.
New Earth – Gower peninsula
Closer to home, and shot with Worm’s Head and Rhossili Beach in the background, this is one of the most dramatic and exotic settings on earth. Consistently voted one of the best beaches in Europe, this is where we see David Tennant as the Time Lord, with Billie Piper as his assistant Rose, on the green cliff edge with the sea in the background.
