The Indian Premier League heads into the all-important play-offs and a pair of 2022 new boys have made the most of their maiden voyages in cricket's most glitzy competition.

The Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans were founded at the end of 2021, ready to make their debuts in 2022, and both teams have qualified for the final four.

Gujarat Titans – led by captain Hardik Pandya – finished top of the table with an impressive 10 victories from 14 outings, while Rajasthan Royals finished ahead of Lucknow Super Giants by virtue of a 0.047 superior net run rate.

Reigning champions Chennai Super Kings hoped this tournament would involve a hunt for their fifth title but they finished ninth in the table, way off the pace required to qualify for the play-offs.

A total of 10 franchises competed for the trophy in 2022, up from the usual eight, and the superb form of the Super Giants and Titans will no doubt capture the attention of entrepreneurs aiming to expand the league further.
