What you need to know: The Gilmore Girls have fallen out before, but this is serious. Rory is living in her grandparents' pool house, doing community service for stealing the yacht and working at a job which Emily arranged: not the Rory everyone knew and loved. Lorelei is hugely hurt.

But while things are going well between Rory and Logan (except for a row about him sleeping with other people while they were split up – think "we were on a break!"), she gets the push she needs when Jess turns up. He reveals how he has turned his life around – shocking her into reconsidering her own decision and returning to Yale.

Luke and Lorelei are engaged, but Luke suddenly finds out he has a daughter when a girl called April Nardini pops into his diner to DNA test him for a school science project. He doesn't know how to tell Lorelei, and when she finds out, it drives a wedge between them, and it may not be possible to repair.

Also in this series: Lorelei adopts a dog, Paul Anka. Lane and her band have been on tour. Lane and Zach get married. Paris is editor of the Yale Daily News but she goes off the rails, so the staff replace her with Rory. Logan's dad forces him into the family business, but when Logan has a serious fall, Rory is the only one who steps up to look after him.

Episode 7, Twenty-One is the Loneliest Number The Gilmore Girls had always planned to spent Rory's 21st birthday in Atlantic City, sipping martinis, playing 21. But as Rory and Lorelei are estranged, Emily plans the birthday instead – and it's way less fun. Rory also has to contend with her mother's pastor, who has been sent to tell her not to have sex: "It is a gift you can only give to one man. Once you give it, it's gone, you cant re-gift it. If you give it away too soon, to the wrong man, then when the right one does come along, you have no gift to give... you'll have to buy him a sweater." Rory breaks the news that the "ultimate gift ship" has said. But on the upside, Lorelei and Rory finally talk.

Episode 13, Friday Night's Alright for Fighting Paris has completely lost her grip on the Yale Daily News, becoming so impossible that most of her staff has quit. Rory takes control, and with Logan's help she gets the paper out on time. Meanwhile, Lorelei tells her parents they no longer need to pay for Yale, and the whole thing leads to a major confrontation at Friday Night Dinner.
