Season seven

This is the only season not to have Amy Sherman-Palladino or Daniel Palladino as showrunner or writer, and many Gilmore Girls fans were disappointed with how things turned out.

The final season – until Netflix's revival, of course – sees Christopher come back between Luke and Lorelei. Lorelei fell into Christopher's arms at the end of season six, and as Luke pleads with her to marry him after all (despite the drama with April), she reveals she slept with Rory's father. They break up and Lorelei is soon with Chris. Together they take his daughter Gigi to visit her mum in Paris, and while there they get hitched. 21 years later! The love triangle continues, though: Luke is very much still a player, and Lorelei and Chris split.

Rory is with Logan, but he's been sent off to London to work for his dad and is pretty miserable about it. Long distance is tough, and Logan has a new life – but they make it work. And then Logan proposes to Rory, but with a strings attached: she must move with him and be given a job in journalism by his newspaper magnate dad, instead of making her own career. She says no, and takes a job following Barack Obama's presidential campaign.

Also in this series: Rory makes friends with Olivia and Lucy, and there is drama with Lucy's boyfriend Marty. Rory is editor of the paper. Liz has a baby. Richard is back in hospital and this time it's serious – though he makes a recovery. Lane has twins.

You should watch...

Episode 12, To Whom It May Concern This is a particularly heartbreaking one to watch after the death of Edward Herrmann. Richard is giving an economics class at Yale when he collapses. Also in this episode, Christopher realises how much Lorelei loves Luke when he finds the character reference she wrote to help Luke's custody battle for April.

Episode 21, Unto the Breach Logan proposes and Rory struggles to make up her mind – but, on graduation day, she gives him a no. Also plenty of drama between Christopher, Lorelei and Luke as the season comes to a close.

Episode 22, Bon Voyage After accepting a job as a journalist on the campaign trail, Rory has three days until she leaves Stars Hollow. There's a goodbye party, and everyone's there, and Richard (soppy after his health scare) finally gives Lorelei the credit she deserves for raising her daughter. And then it's goodbye to Stars Hollow - for now.
