Only Murders in the Building season 4: Release date and latest news
The new season is finally here!
*Warning: This article contains full spoilers for Only Murders in the Building season 3.*
The new season of Only Murders in the Building is here at long last, following on from the explosive cliffhanger ending of season 3.
All our burning questions are set to be answered over the coming weeks as new episodes are released weekly on Disney Plus – and it's sure set to be one of the best seasons yet, according to the show's stars.
Steve Martin (who plays Charles-Haden Savage) already previously revealed that "we think it could be one of our best seasons", and the cast has expanded to starry proportions.
As well as Meryl Streep reprising her season 3 role of Loretta Durkin, the new season also marks the introduction of Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover trilogy), Kumail Nanjiani (Welcome to Chippendales), Eugene Levy (Schitt's Creek), Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria and Melissa McCarthy (The Little Mermaid) into the OMITB universe.
Of course, they join our three returning leads – Martin Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez – as well as some other new additions, which you can find out more about below.
But the new season signals the somewhat surprising exit of Jesse Williams's Tobert, as the actor confirmed to People: "No, I'm not on that show anymore."
The fourth season also marks the cast's venturing out of The Arconia as they take on Los Angeles, as a Hollywood studio wants to make a film all about the trio's hit podcast.
At the same time, though, they have to investigate the murder of Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch) – all exciting plot lines we get a glimpse of in the recently released trailer.
Creator John Hoffman has also teased that the sixth episode of the new season marks quite the turn from normal, telling The Hollywood Reporter: "Episode 6 is our sort of more experimental leap we took, which basically sprung from a season in all forms of looking at film and movies and what they’ve done.
"Films have only been around for a little over a hundred years, so I thought, 'Let’s experiment with an episode that is all through cameras, and let’s see what that feels like.'"
But when exactly is the new season landing on our screens, and who else from the cast will return? Read on to find out more about Only Murders in the Building season 4.
Only Murders in the Building season 4 release date
Only Murders in the Building season 4 premiered on Disney Plus in the UK on Tuesday 27th August, with new episodes being released weekly.
The season rolls out on the same date in the US, but instead on streaming platform Hulu.
Who will star in Only Murders in the Building season 4?
Only Murders in the Building wouldn't quite be what it is without the main trio now, would it? Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez will all be back as Charles, Oliver and Mabel in season 4.
The new instalment is set to kick off in LA, so it'll be exciting seeing the gang in a new environment as they get to grips with the glitz and glam of Hollywood.
It was announced earlier this year that Meryl Streep's Loretta would be making a return, so let's hope her relationship with Oliver is a little more plain-sailing this season.
Streep's return was confirmed by 20th Television president Karey Burke, whose studio produces Only Murders in the Building. She told The Hollywood Reporter’s podcast: "Meryl is returning for next season because she had a tremendous time."
Although Mabel and her love interest Tobert (Jesse Williams) were discussing their LA future together in the season 3 finale, it's now been confirmed that Williams will not be returning for season 4.
In terms of new characters, there's a plethora of fresh faces joining the series, as Eva Longoria, Eugene Levy and Kumail Nanjiani have all been cast as recurring characters this season.
Zach Galifianakis is also joining the cast, but hasn't been described as a recurring character. However, he has been said to be "integral to the twist and turns of this season’s investigation".
Other new cast additions include The White Lotus's Molly Shannon as a "high-powered LA business woman who finds herself drawn into the world of the investigation in NY", according to Deadline.
Further cast announcements include Desmin Borges (You're the Worst), Siena Werber (Brand New Cherry Flavor) and newcomer Lilian Rebelo, as well as Richard Kind, Daphne Rubin-Vega, comedian Catherine Cohen and Pachinko's Jin Ha.
The season 4 premiere episode also included a special cameo appearance from Scott Bakula, who is known for his roles in Quantum Leap, Star Trek: Enterprise and NCIS: New Orleans.
These are the cast members confirmed to star in Only Murders in the Building season 4:

What will happen in Only Murders in the Building season 4?
As for what will happen in the fourth season, as usual plot details have been kept under wraps. But we have a pretty big feeling that the drama will centre on Sazz's murder, especially as the bullet that appears to have killed her was intended for Charles. So, who could be out to kill him?
While the third season revolved around a Broadway show murder, it looks as though the gang will be venturing off to Los Angeles. Previously speaking about the move to LA for season 4, Only Murders in the Building co-creator John Hoffman told Deadline: "Well, we are gonna see if there’s a definite touch of Los Angeles in small doses. We’ll see.
"That is a wish, too, because there are continuations. It’s not like we put a final period on the interpersonal relationships that were so beautifully built across the season. I loved watching the reactions throughout the season to these personal relationships and what they mean.
"Now the trio is in a situation where with everyone they get involved they wonder, what have I done? Have I gotten involved with someone nefarious and murderous, potentially? I love the audience going with that and feeling it and making assumptions, presumptions about all of it, and then flipping in ways that are gentler and surprising.
"We hate losing anybody in the cast like we said about Jane, but we can find ways of keeping them involved as this great ensemble continues."
The trio's friendship was seriously tested in season 3, as Mabel disagreed with the way that Oliver and Charles were investigating, going off on her own and then with love interest Tobert to crack the case of Ben Glenroy's (Paul Rudd) murder.
But could their friendship be tested once again? We now know that season 4 will see the trio take on Hollywood in the first episodes as a studio approaches them with the prospect of making a film about their hit podcast.
Eva Longoria, Eugene Levy and Zach Galifianakis will all be starring as themselves, and will be the actors looking to portray Mabel, Charles and Oliver in the new movie.
