34. Hillsborough (BBC1)
The definitive account of Hillsborough’s harrowing story took a long time to come to the BBC. Too long. Daniel Gordon’s eviscerating account of 15 April 1989 aired two years ago in the United States, but could not be shown in the UK while the inquest was being conducted. Two years. That’s nothing compared to the 27 years during which the families of the 96 were tormented by lies and fought for justice. The documentary evidence this film reveals – the horror of the Leppings Lane crush, the barbarity of the institutional cover-up – was frightening for us, but all too familiar to those families. We thought we knew the story of Hillsborough. We had no idea. James Gill
