Meet Culverton Smith Culverton Smith is one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's nastiest Sherlock Holmes villains, an expert in tropical diseases who attempts to poison Holmes and then appears to delight in watching him suffer, in original story The Adventure of the Dying Detective. We still don't know a great deal about the modern-day version of Smith that Toby Jones is playing, beyond the fact that he is described by writer Steven Moffat as "terrifying, diabolical and disgusting" but there's certainly a sense that he may be cleverer and more devious than his Victorian counterpart, whose arrogance made him no match for Sherlock Holmes.

What else has Toby Jones been in? With 25 years in the business, Toby Jones is now recognised as one of Britain's most versatile and talented actors. Sci-fi and fantasy fans may know him as the Dream King in Doctor Who or as the voice of Dobby the house elf in the Harry Potter films but more heavyweight roles have included acclaimed turns as Truman Capote in 2006 movie Infamous and as Alfred Hithcock in BBC2's The Girl, plus parts in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Berberian Sound Studio and the Hunger Games.
