6. Kirk/Picard

With the launch of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and along with it a new Enterprise and a new Captain, Trekkers split in two. Are you Kirk, or are you Picard? Yes, they’re both balding men (although only one accepts it) and they’re both damn fine captains, but otherwise they are different as chalk and Klingon Blood Wine.

The thoughtful, ultra-serious Picard (Patrick Stewart) was a million light years away from the swaggering James Tiberius Kirk. While Jim couldn’t get through an episode of the original series without taking his shirt off and bopping an alien, Picard’s only vice was a hot cup of tea. Their differences neatly divided those fans who preferred Star Trek as a technicolour adventure, and those who enjoyed the more ponderous aspects of the show.

The captains eventually teamed up in the woeful movie Generations, although that hasn’t stopped the fan debate. But who does William Shatner think is best? Take a wild guess.
