The three-part series, which is adapted from Agatha Christie's 1934 novel of the same name, will arrive on BritBox this spring and features cameos from Dame Emma Thompson and Jim Broadbent.

Why Didn't They Ask Evans? stars The Revenant's Will Poulter as Bobby Jones, a young naval officer who begins investigating the death of a man who asks the mysterious titular question with his dying breath.

With the help of his childhood friend Lady Frances 'Frankie' Derwent, played by Bohemian Rhapsody's Lucy Boynton, Bobby tries to decipher the man's final question and hits upon "a dark conspiracy of deceit, betrayal and – perhaps unsurprisingly – murder".

The Night Manager's Laurie directs the series and also portrays Dr James Nicholson, the Clinical Director of the local sanatorium.

As for the rest of the cast, Game of Thrones star Conleth Hill plays Bobby's mentor Dr Thomas, I Hate Suzie's Daniel Ings plays Roger Bassington-ffrench, The Secret Garden's Maeve Dermody plays Nicholson's troubled wife Moira and Small Axe's Jonathan Jules plays Bobby's shipmate Ralph "Knocker" Beadon.

The Durrells star Miles Jupp (Henry Bassington-ffrench), Downton Abbey's Amy Nuttall (Sylvia Bassington-ffrench), Sex Education's Alistair Petrie (Reverend Richard Jones), The Death of Stalin's Paul Whitehouse (Mr Askew), Breeders' Morwenna Banks (Mrs Cayman), Richard Dixon (Mr Cayman) and Black Mirror's Joshua James (Dr George Arbuthnot) also appear in the upcoming series.

Why Didn't They Ask Evans? is the latest original title from BritBox, which is currently the home of The Beast Must Die, Spitting Image and Lambs of God.
