6. The “Virgin” Queen
This is the ultimate in running Doctor Who gags, with the Doctor’s marriage to Tudor monarch Elizabeth I (and their implied intimacy) being mentioned in various episodes over the years.
Take this exchange between the Tenth Doctor and an Ood in The End of Time part 1:
“Got married. That was a mistake. Good Queen Bess. And let me tell you, her nickname is no longer… Ahem.”
And in case you’d missed this reference to Elizabeth’s nickname of “The Virgin Queen”, the subject was addressed directly by both future monarch Liz 10 in 2010’s The Beast below and the Tenth Doctor himself (again) in 2013 anniversary special The Day of the Doctor.
Liz 10: “And so much for the Virgin Queen, you bad, bad boy.”
The Tenth Doctor: “Oh, good work, Doctor. Nice one. The Virgin Queen? So much for history.”
Even Toby Jones’ Dream Lord (who in fairness was just a dark version of the Doctor’s personality) brought it up in 2010 episode Amy’s Choice while chatting to Karen Gillan’s companion
Dream Lord: “You’re in there. Loves a redhead, the Doctor. Has he told you about Elizabeth the First? Well, she thought she was the first.”
