What did Doctor Who's companions do next?
As Jenna Coleman takes on a new starring role in BBC drama The Cry, we take a look at what she and the other New Who sidekicks have done since leaving the Tardis
Freema Agyeman
Played Martha Jones (2007-2008)
Taking the reins from Rose Tyler, Martha Jones was the Tenth Doctor’s companion before choosing to part ways with the Time Lord, played by David Tennant, at the end of the fourth series.
While Freema Agyeman reprised her role as Martha in Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood, and made brief cameos in the series, she also juggled a series of starring roles.
Playing Alesha Phillips in ITV crime drama series Law & Order: UK until 2012, Agyeman, 39,was a season regular in Netflix series Sense8, playing Amanita Caplan. She's currently starring in NBC medical drama New Amsterdam.
Karen Gillan
Played Amy Pond (2012-2013)
Making quite an impression when she first appeared on our screens in that police officer outfit, Amy Pond was the Eleventh Doctor's first companion when Matt Smith took the role in 2010, before bowing out to be with true love Rory (played by Arthur Darvill) in 2012.
Since then, Karen Gillan has turned her attention to films, achieving international acclaim in her portrayal of Nebula in 2014 Marvel epic Guardians of the Galaxy – a role she has since reprised in the film’s 2017 sequel and in Avengers: Infinity War.
Gillan, 30, also starred in box-office hit Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and released her own film as writer and director, titled The Party’s Just Beginning, earlier this year.
