It's not often that someone gets to reinvent the wheel in television, but Russell T Davies has done more than his fair share of reinvention.

When he brought back Doctor Who in 2005, those of us brought up on Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker arched an eyebrow and whispered "Good luck with that" to each other.

But it returned bigger, brighter and sharper than ever, which was a surprise to everyone apart from Davies. His love of this British institution came across in every episode, and those of us who enjoyed watching the revived series with our children welcomed the news that he was taking the reins again, starting with last year's Christmas special.

Twelve months on, we talk to the man himself and to Steven Moffat, who took over from him as showrunner.

The fact that Moffat has written the Christmas special this year (the 15th of the new era) has excited fans young and old alike. It's a fascinating conversation between the two men, and great fun, but for those who have never hidden behind a sofa from a Doctor Who monster, there's plenty more in this issue...
