What is the best Doctor Who regeneration scene of all time?
Another regeneration is on the cards - but which Time Lords have had the most memorable transformation to date?
5. Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison) to Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker)
Colin Baker's boyishly charming Fifth Doctor made way for Colin Baker's Six. Fun fact: he tries to strangle his companion Peri soon after this.
6. Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker) to Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy)
Problem: Colin Baker refuses to come back for his death scene. Solution? Sylvester McCoy in a rubbish orange wig. Also, what's with the monster arm prodding him back to life like the Doctor is late for school?
7. Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) to Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann)
The 1990s TV movie got a lot wrong, but this gruesome regeneration was not one of them. It loses some points for the sheer grimness: a random mugging and botched surgery is not our idea of sci-fi escapism.
8. Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) to War Doctor (John Hurt)
Possibly the best part of the Whovian hyper-Christmas that was the show's 50th anniversary, this short was a genuine surprise: reintroducing, rehabilitating and regenerating McGann's Doctor. Full of fan service and as dark as a regeneration scene should be (he is dying after all) this also features the best last line of any Doctor: "Physician, heal thyself."
