DEPARTING
Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy)
![501557,EastEnders A troubled Sonia sits at the kitchen table in EastEnders](https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/3/2025/01/501557-ad3a8de.jpg?quality=90&fit=700,467)
When is Sonia Fowler leaving? February 2025.
Natalie Cassidy has quit her iconic role as Sonia Fowler after 32 years on and off from the role.
The actress originated the role in 1993 before departing in 2007 and making further guest appearances until a full-time return from 2014 onwards.
Sonia is expected to depart as part of the 40th anniversary storylines, with the character currently pregnant with a child by fiancee Reiss Colwell who is secretly a killer and has been keeping her sister Bianca Jackson (Patsy Palmer) a prisoner in a storage containment facility after she learned the truth. Bianca confessed on video tape to murdering Reiss's late wife Debbie but he is the real killer and while Sonia is currently free after a brief spell in prison, Reiss remains at large and Bianca a captive.
Will Sonia safely give birth to her child and will Reiss be punished for his crimes?
In a statement shared by The Sun, Cassidy said: "I feel extremely sad to be writing this, but also very excited. After another 11 solid years back on The Square, I have decided it’s time to move on to pastures new. EastEnders is in my bones so I will never forget where I started my career and I will continue to love the show.
"Thank you to Chris Clenshaw for the opportunity to be such a big part of the 40th anniversary – it’s an honour. See ya, Sonia, going but never forgotten.”
Executive producer, Clenshaw, added to the publication: "Over the last 31 years in EastEnders, Natalie has been involved in some of the show’s most iconic and explosive storylines. Her portrayal of Sonia has made her a firm fan favourite amongst the viewers.
"I won’t be revealing the finite details relating to her exit, but I can say that she will take a central role in the 40th anniversary storylines in a week of truly unmissable drama that will change the lives of those in Walford forever. I’d like to thank Natalie for her time at EastEnders, and I wish her all the best for the future."
Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman)
![501443,EastEnders Jonny Freeman as Reiss Colwell in a suit standing in Sonia Fowler's living room in EastEnders.](https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/3/2025/01/501443-a31d769.jpg?quality=90&fit=700,453)
When is Reiss Colwell leaving? Early 2025.
Actor Jonny Freeman is reportedly bowing out from his role as killer Reiss Colwell in EastEnders.
The Sun reports that cast members attended Freeman's leaving party near the show’s production home in Elstree and Borehamwood.
Among cast members photographed and reported to be in attendance were Natalie Cassidy (Sonia Fowler), Charlie Suff (Johnny Carter), and Aaliyah James (Avant Nandra-Hart).
Freeman debuted on EastEnders as a relation of the late Dot Branning (June Brown) for her funeral in December 2022 but later Reiss became a love interest of the long-running character Sonia and provided some comic relief with his awkward interactions opposite iconic Walford residents.
The BBC declined to comment on the report of Freeman's exit when approached by RadioTimes.com.
Will Reiss be brought to justice? Or could he escape? Or could he meet a more untimely demise?
Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner)

When is Stacey Slater leaving? Early 2025.
We've had the wonderful news that actress Lacey Turner has just welcomed her third child which means her beloved character Stacey Slater will be written out for a time on-screen.
It remains to be seen how she will be written out, but how will this impact her love triangle with ex-husband Martin Fowler and his other ex-wife Ruby Allen?
RETURNING
Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp)
![504790,EastEnders Ross Kemp poses in a black jacket in front of the Walford East Tube Station as Grant Mitchell for EastEnders.](https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/3/2024/12/504790-2c273d5.jpg?quality=90&fit=700,467)
When is Grant Mitchell returning? Early 2025.
Ross Kemp will be reprising his role as Grant Mitchell in the run-up to EastEnders' 40th anniversary.
The top-secret story will see him reunited with his brother Phil, old friend Nigel, and ex-wife Sharon.
Regarding his return to the soap, Ross Kemp commented: "I’m delighted to be returning to EastEnders as the show heads towards its 40th anniversary. EastEnders has always meant so much to me, so to return as the show is about to celebrate such a special anniversary, is an absolute honour.
"Grant has never been far from the action and let’s just say, this time is no different as he certainly comes back with a bang."
Meanwhile, executive producer Chris Clenshaw added: "We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Ross Kemp back to EastEnders as he reprises the legendary role of Grant Mitchell.
"Whilst I’m not currently revealing exactly what brings Grant back to Walford, I can say that his return will play a significant part in the show’s 40th anniversary, and will make up many moments of truly unmissable TV."
Shirley Carter (Linda Henry)
![EastEnders Shirley Carter December 2022 Linda Henry as Shirley Carter outside at night in Walford with Denise Fox in the background in a scene from EastEnders.](https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/3/2023/10/EastEnders-Shirley-Carter-December-2022-69e5fed.jpg?quality=90&fit=620,413)
When is Shirley Carter returning to EastEnders? TBC.
EastEnders fan-favourite Shirley Carter made a surprise departure from Walford just after Christmas in 2022 following the apparent death of her son Mick Carter.
Deciding that there was nothing left for her in Walford, Shirley walked out of the Square with Lady Di the dog to stay with daughter Carly Wicks and her family, having said goodbye to friends Jean Slater and Denise Fox.
We then heard of Shirley in February 2023 when we learned that she had also reunited with her previously estranged son Dean Wicks off-screen, the man who had raped Mick's true love, Linda Carter.
When Dean made his horrific return on Halloween, he claimed that Shirley had experienced a mental breakdown and had been institutionalised and after Linda wasn't in contact with her, changed her number and wanted nothing to do with her.
Linda was distrustful of Dean's claims but was unable to get through to Shirley, meaning her fate remains mysterious.
Actress Linda Henry is taking an extended break from the show and has been off our screens for over two years. Since then, Shirley's son Dean finally admitted that he raped Linda Carter back in 2014 and has now been sentenced to nine years in prison.
However, the BBC confirmed to RadioTimes.com at the time of her exit that Shirley had not left the soap for good and would return.
Chris Clenshaw also told us in Autumn 2023: "So, Linda Henry is currently taking a break from the show.
"But you know, when she walked off with Lady Di last year, in the wake of Mick’s disappearance, it won't have been the last you see of her. I can say that for sure."
Will we ever see Shirley Carter again?
